About
Soulfelt
The Soulfelt story as written by Paul McGuire (Breakin
Point)
Many months ago Nick and John embarked on a mission. John
Keefe, who is currently working as a web designer and
has strong feelings towards art and music, and Nick Duckney,
a cutting edge designer with a background in fine art
decided that With their knowledge and expertise, acquired
from their professional backgrounds, to create an online
resource that promoted, documented, and inspired talent
and creativity within the north west focusing initially
on the Liverpool area. The timing was perfect. During
a period when the Capital of Culture award and it’s
implications for Liverpool were being realised and activity
in artistic and musical spheres there was a team ready
to cultivate the Soulfelt concept and evolve with it.
Artists, Djs, wordsmiths with their fingers on the pulse.
Armed with nothing but their keyboards and brains, the
two got fresh with technology until something began to
take shape...
The creation of Soulfelt was never going to be an easy
task as it would require more than just the building
of a website. It would need major contributions from
the very people that the website was trying to help.
Which is how it came about the Chibuku Shake Shake resident
DJ Phil Charnock would complete the Soulfelt trio. Phil
Charnock, an up and coming DJ on the Liverpool Scene,
was to become an integral piece of the soulfelt jigsaw
puzzle. Phil, who is studying at Liverpool John Moores
University, brought the soulfelt vision to life by giving
the site a new platform to be showcased. That being
the vast music scene that Liverpool possesses. Phil
brought new ideas to the initial concept and made it
possible for us to have some of the best DJs the North
West has to offer streaming mixes off the site which
is a major drawing point for the website.
After six months of labour, technology had given birth
to the brainchild of Nick, John and Phil. It was time
to give soulfelt to the world and there could only be
one way that this could be done………..A
PARTY!!
There was a strong sense of achievement as the Soulfelt
banner was draped across the wall of the Lemon Lounge.
Amongst us there was a feeling of excitement and anticipation,
not only because of the night ahead but also for the
many possibilities that opening of the site entailed.
As well as the friends and various Soulfelt associates
we’d expected, there was plenty of interest from
public and those drawn by the overall hype. Within the
fisrt couple of hours it was evident that all the hard
work promoting and flyering had not fallen on deaf ears.
Lucky Strike, of Surreal Madrid fame, kicked off with
a set of unrelenting breaks and hip hop inflected jams.
Slick mixing and top choice trickery ensured that early
arrivals were smacked up sharp for the night ahead.
It was then down to Soulfelt’s Phil Charnock to
take the capacity crowds ears and limbs into a beautifully
crafted eclectic set of house, hip hop, Jazz and pretty
much anything that possessed soul. DJ Conrad was left
with the difficult task of keeping the evenings proceedings
flowing until the final curtain call. Conrad stepped
things up a notch and rendered the new found soulfeltarians
powerless to not shake their asses. As the night drew
closer to its close he continued to sink his needles
into a series of flawless tracks of the hour that just
added to the electric atmosphere that had been building
all night. The night was a success…….
It seems like a long time now since initial ideas were
set in motion and it is apparent that soulfelt is here
to stay. After the success of the launch party soulfelt
has evolved further from just being a website. It now
is a monthly night hidden away in southport, the town
that boasts the soul weekender, in the intimate Bar
Flava on Lord Street.
There is certainly a lot more to come from Soulfelt
which is very apparent when you speak to anyone involved.
The energy and commitment that comes across from all
just tells you that the team behind this has every intention
to take Soulfelt alot further and rumours of a Southport
Weekender After party and nights planned in Liverpool
and London just fuel their fires….stay tuned.
